Politics and Spirituality Go Hand and Hand

Some say politics and spirituality don’t mix. I say, no, in fact it’s just the opposite. Given the state of affairs that have been going on most recently in the USA, such as racist police violence, the sabotage of the USPS and more, the two together play a big part.

You might ask, as I have, what the f*** is going on? Ever since Trump has been in office, it’s been one horrible thing after another. He’s even put our national security at risk more than once. It’s believed by many that he’s suffering from some kind of medical brain issue. The most compelling was this interview with from a forensic psychiatrist, if you’re interested in the science.

But there’s much more to it. If it wasn’t Trump, it probably would have been someone(s) else. On a spiritual level it’s about the global transformation that we’re in the midst of now. Many of us feel, especially all you empaths out there, that there is a global shift going on and has been building for years. A transformation of any kind brings fear with it. Trump supporters are terrified and their anger is a reaction to the shift that’s slowly happening. Issues in other countries too. Just look at what’s going on between China and Hong Kong. The middle east, south America and other countries as well. Some more so than others.

Those Trump supporters behavior, that we just can’t wrap our heads around, is because they just can’t see what’s going on. They're terrified of change. This long-awaited shift in consciousness will eventually take our souls to a higher level of being. But, it’s not going to happen overnight or without considerable resistance from less spiritually advanced souls. This isn’t an insult to those resisting, it’s an explanation of what’s happening on a soul level.

Whether you believe it our not, our souls do come back again and again to learn important lessons. Our spirit guides (no, I’m not crazy) help us to learn important lessons which can take many life times to achieve and understand. There are ten basic core values that all souls need to learn and they are very simple...Equality, Cooperation, Respect, Justice, Truth, Knowledge, Understanding, Freedom, Peace & Love.

“You are guided to walk each of the ten paths at all times. If you’re ever uncertain as to which path to walk, simply ask what is the loving way to act.” ~Ainslie MacLeod’s spirit guides.

Unfortunately, Trump doesn’t meet any of these core values. That’s why many of us see him as a young soul or maybe even an older soul that’s gotten lost somehow. Maybe if he had, had a better upbringing he could have learned some of these values. But it wasn’t what he was given this time around. There are other leaders around the world that lack these values as well. I don’t think I need to name any of them because you probably know at least a few of whom I’m talking about.

If it hadn’t been for the spiritually conscious older souls taking action, we’d never have had the Civil Rights movement in the ’60’s. I’m happy to say I took part in that movement along with my action oriented parents. Spirituality and politics are inseparable.

“Change and progress, are very rarely gifts from above. They come out of struggles from below.”

~ Noam Chomsky

Being a spiritual person isn’t just about meditating and doing yoga. Those activities are important and can help us stay sane and grounded. They’re a means to an end, but not the end in itself. A person on a spiritual path is someone who expresses those old-soul values through their actions and words all the time, not just during the rough times. True spirituality is about doing the work to make certain that everyone is treated equally. This is why spirituality and politics are inseparable.

We are all one. When one of us is victimized by violence of any kind, racism and inequality, we’re all victimized. The racism and inequality in this country shows just how truly dysfunctional we are as a nation. There are many other countries around the globe that are dysfunctional as well.

Over the decades and centuries, many people have put their freedom and lives on the line and still do so today. We’re still fighting for equality, especially for those people of color, women and the LGBTQ community. The consequences for many on the front line is devastating.

“Sometimes we have to do the work even though we don’t yet see a glimmer on the horizon that it’s actually going to be possible.” by Angela Davis

Being spiritual is an active, not a passive activity. It shows spiritual maturity when we stand up for the rights of others and ourselves even when it doesn’t directly effect us. This is important and necessary work by old souls.

It’s a sign of spiritual maturity to stand up for the rights of others, even when you’re not directly affected by the injustices yourself; perhaps especially so. For example, white people joining the Black Lives Matter movement. If you identify as a spiritual old soul, I implore you to use your talents and available means to contribute towards the transformation.

Not every one of us is able to take to the streets to protest. But we can all play a part in creating a better world for those who are marginalized, brutalized, and abused by a system that’s deliberately designed to keep them down. If you’re wondering what you can do to contribute towards equality for all, there are plenty of examples all over social media and the internet. I myself will join marches, send money, and letters through Vote Forward to encourage people to vote. I share my views with lawn signs for the candidates I support. The list is endless in ways you can support transformation.

Spirituality which inspires activism and similarly, politics which move the spirit - which draw from the deep-seated place of our greatest longings for freedom - give meaning to our lives.

~Cherrie Moraga

Choose to be on the right side of history.

I ask you to reflect on how you might answer the following question some years from now:

“What did you do to help bring in the transformation?”
