Back to School Feng Shui

Give your child support in school by following a few simple feng shui tips at home.

1. Create a study area in your child's room. According to Feng Shui principles, it's best to position the desk so your child can see the door to the room. Avoid locating the desk where your child must sit with his or her back to the door. If there is no room in your child’s room for a desk, create a separate area in the house for studying, rather than scattering papers on the kitchen or dining room table.

2. Control Clutter. Clutter shows us that we have trouble moving forward. Your child needs spaces where he/she can put things away, especially when it's time to do homework. While some amount of clutter is normal for most children, excessive clutter creates a distraction and the ability to focus. I know all too well how distractions, clutter or other, effected me.

3. Position the computer away from the bed and shut it off at night. Doing this will cut down on the negative effects of EMF’s in your child’s room. If the room is too small to put the computer far from the bed, place a living plant near the computer to absorb some of the EMFs.

4. Hang a bulletin board or create a display area near the desk to showcase achievements. This is the ideal place to hang your child's awards along with artwork, report cards, and any special papers that can remind your child how well he or she is doing.

5. Fish and shells are symbols of educational success in Feng Shui, so why not add a fishbowl, an aquarium, or collection of shells to the room. Plus, taking care of an aquarium nurture’s and gives your child a sense of responsibility and pride.

6. Remove under-bed storage for a better night’s sleep. Especially important is to avoid keeping shoes under the bed. This represents "walking away" from peaceful sleep. If you must store things under your child's bed, be sure they are soft items like out of season clothes or linens. Anything else is considered too stimulating that detracts from a good night’s sleep.

7. Along with keeping clutter at bay, be sure to clean the windows regularly. In Feng Shui windows represent the eyes, so dirty windows represent a cloudy vision. Where as clean windows symbolically open up your child’s vision of the world, yours too.

8. Photos of parents, grandparents, and happy family gatherings help communicate love and security to a child. So put up a few photos around your child’s room to show that loving support for your child to succeed.
